Prospective owners must be aged 21 years or over.
We will not re-home to potential owners who are likely to leave a dog alone for long periods of time (over 5 hours).
We generally do not re-home to families with young children, but will look at this on a case by case basis.
All dogs must be neutered. Should the dog be offered for adoption before being neutered (for example, bitches who have only just finished a season cannot be neutered for 3 months as this may compromise their health) then the new owner is responsible for having the dog neutered at The Yorkshire Rescue’s registered vet. Follow up by The Yorkshire Rescue will ensure this happens. This expense is covered by The Yorkshire Rescue.
We will not re-home to where a dog is kept outdoors.
The new owner is responsible for veterinary treatment and third party liability from the moment the dog is legally adopted from The Yorkshire Rescue.
We expect new owners to give the dog a reasonable amount of time to settle and adjust to a new life, however if an incompatibility arises the dog MUST be returned to The Yorkshire Rescue at the owner’s expense. The Yorkshire Rescue cannot accept responsibility for the temperament of any dog once it has been re-homed or fostered. All our dogs are given thorough health and temperament assessments, however once a dog has settled into a new home his or her behaviour can sometimes change. We can only advise on the temperament of any dog while it is in our care, or in rare occasions based on the information provided by previous owner.

Our adoption procedure is as follows…

We will interview you to discover what you want from owning a dog, your lifestyle and home circumstances, so that we can match one of our dogs to suit you, and you to them. We go through a process of checking your suitability for a particular dog that you are interested in – you may be turned down for one particular dog that you are interested in but offered one that is better suited to your lifestyle and needs.

We may take up references from a veterinary surgeon. All family members/people living at the address must meet the dog and demonstrate commitment to owning a rescue dog. All owners are asked to sign an adoption contract. All puppies must attend training classes so you must provide information on training classes in your area.

Please consider carefully the responsibility of adopting a lost or abandoned dog – the whole family must be 100% committed to wanting a rescue dog. The rewards are tremendous – rescue dogs understand they have been saved so make loyal and faithful pets.

However, you must remember that these dogs can be needy and are often disturbed by their past treatment. Please consider whether you have the time, patience and love to give to such a dog. Many have been to hell and back and they feel deep sadness when people adopt them then return them within a short time without giving enough time to settle into their new life.

It may take a rescue dog severe months to adapt to its new home. How would you approach any behavioural issues that may arise e.g. Barking, toileting issues, reactivity to other dogs, reactivity to people, separation anxiety, guarding, aggression.

Do you or your family have any relevant medical considerations e.g allergies, mobility issues etc?

Have you considered back-up care for your dog if you are no longer able to look after it due to a change of circumstances?

Have you considered the cost of dog ownership, and are you confident you can meet it? Will you be taking out pet insurance?

ABOUT YOUR HOME: What sort or area do you live? E.g. rural, urban.

Do you own your home? If your home is rented, do you have written permission from your landlord to adopt a dog? Please provide a copy.

Do you have a secure, fenced outside area? Is this shared or private? Please describe. Do your adjoining neighbours have children or pets?

Where will your dog be living in your home? Where will the dog sleep at night?

Are you moving house or planning a holiday in the next six months? Have you thought about dog care during this period?

How did you hear about us? Do you have any further questions?

If your application to adopt is successful you will be asked to provide: A copy of your passport or driving licence, A copy of a utility bill, A character reference, Photos of your home and garden.

Data Sharing: The information you have provided on this form will only be used to facilitate your adoption. The Yorkshire Rescue will store your data securely, and will not pass it on to third parties except in specific required situations, for example updating micro-chipping databases, sharing your details with our behavioural trainer if relevant, or if required to by statutory agencies e.g. the Police. You agree you are over 18 years of age and that the information provided in this form is true to the best of your knowledge. You consent to the enclosed information being held by The Yorkshire Rescue Ltd.
